Nowadays fashion includes almost every social reality, but it had its major expression in clothing, involving young people mostly. People get dressed the way they like, inspired by urban realities. But it has not always been like that. There have been many young subcultures in-between, starting from the 40s. The term subcultureis used in sociology to define a group of people who have something in common, which is different from the prevailing culture for lifestyle, view of the world and beliefs. One of the main subculture theorists, Dick Hebdige, pointed out that subcultures often stand out mostly through the way people get dressed, because clothing, masking and embellishment have been the main elements to communicate through the body since ever. Generally youth subcultures are thought to be born in 1947, which is the year when a group of young bikers got together in California wearing jeans, boots and leather jackets, causing an uproar in the puritan US society.
